Abstract

Nonlinear hyperbolicity, causality, and stability are analyzed for the Israel-Stewart theory of relativistic heat-conducting fluids formulated in the Landau-Lifshitz frame. We find that this theory is hyperbolic for large deviations from equilibrium, unlike the Eckart frame Israel-Stewart theory, and that acausality implies instability in this theory.
