Abstract

The effects of fire on populations of certain species of ground beetles was investigated between 1969 and 1972 at Tall Timbers Research Station, Leon County, Florida. Forest plots which had been burned annually and those unburned for 10 years or longer were sampled by unbaited pitfall traps. Results indicate that where leaf litter was present following fire exclusion, carabids such as Evarthrus morio (Dej.), E. laevipennis (LeC.), E. sigillatus (Say), Dicaelus crenatus LeC., D. ambiguus Laf., Pasimachus subsulcatus Say, and Scaphinotus unicolor floridanus Leng, were much more numerous than other species. In annually burned forests, Notiophilus novemstriatus LeC. and Pasimachus sublaevis Beauv. were found in greater numbers.
