Abstract

To evaluate the current status of Wismar Bay, the distribution of macrobenthos is analysed and compared to that of other coastal regions in the Western and Southern Baltic Sea. Although salinity gradients have some effect on the faunal zonation in Wismar Bay, substrate characteristics such as sediment texture, organic content, and the presence of plants exert more control. A comparison with investigations done in the 1930s indicates a shift to a species composition less sensitive to eutrophication. Several species appear likely to disappear from the Bay should current environmental changes continue
