Abstract

1. The hypolipidemic action of etofibrate has been studied on hypercholesterolemic, hypertriglyceridemic and hyperlipidemic rats and the results have been compared with those of treatment with two other lipid-lowering drugs, clofibrate and nicotinic acid. 2. Serum and liver cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid and free fatty acid levels were determined. Liver lipid biosynthesis from [1- 14C]acetate was also studied. 3. Etofibrate and clofibrate produced similar effects on serum lipids of hypercholesterolemic rats but a more potent effect of etofibrate on lowering liver cholesterol was found. Eeofibrate showed the most protective action in hypertriglyceridemic rats. Etofibrate and clofibrate were similarly effective in reducing serum cholesterol and triglyceride and liver triglyceride levels of hyperlipidemic rats.
