Abstract

In this study, effects of ethanol and1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) were investigated on the senescence of cut Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis Roem. toprolongthe vase life safely and cost-effectively. Ethylene treatment at 500 I¼l L-1 for 24 h significantly shortened the vase life of both florets and spikes, showing that it is ethylene sensitive. Gaseous 1-MCP treatment at 1 I¼l L-1 was effective in extending the vase life of florets but not the spikes. Ethanol treatment with 0.1% holding solution was significantly effective in delaying the senescence of the florets and extend the vase life of both the florets and spikes of the cut flowers.
