Abstract

The ability of isoproterenol, epinephrine, norepinephrine and mixtures of norepinephrine and isoproterenol to protect against the lethal effects of a histamine challenge in mice treated with propranolol or a saline extract (SE) of B . pertussis cells was compared. All treatments produced significant protection in propranolol-treated mice. In SE-treated mice, epinephrine gave good protection, but isoproterenol was ineffective in small doses and deleterious in larger doses, producing a significant increase in mortality over that of the untreated control mice. Isoproterenol added to norepinephrine also decreased the protective capability of norepinephrine in SE-treated mice.
