Abstract

Objective To assess the effects of endovascular stent placement on left renal vein entrapment syndrome. Methods Six patients with left renal vein entrapment syndrome undergoing endovascular stent placement in our department between June 2002 and July 2011 were enrolled in the study. All the patients underwent laboratory tests, computed tomography(CT),and (or) color Doppler ultrasonography prior to and following endovascular stent placement. Results Self-expandable stents were successfully placed in all the subjects. The diameter of left renal vein (LRV) at aorto-superior mesenteric artery (SMA) portion was (1.88±0.95)mm and (5.24±0.61) mm prior to and following the operation, respectively. The left renal vein pressure was (11.00±4.34) mm Hg and (6.00±2.55) mm Hg during the operation and postoperatively.Gross or macroscopic hematuria was not reported and normal urinalysis results were revealed at months 2 to 6 postoperatively.Remission of gross or macroscopic hematuria remained after a follow-up period of 6-60 months.Color Doppler ultrasonography or CT showed unobstructed blood flow and did not suggest evidence of re-stenosis or stent thrombosis. Two patients had completely resolved left varicocele postoperatively. Conclusion Endovascular stent placement is clinically effective in patients with left renal vein entrapment syndrome. Key words: Left renal vein entrapment syndrome; Endovascular stent placement; Hematuria Treatment outcome
