Event Abstract Back to Event Effects of emotional auditory expressions on visual processing Alejandra Sel1*, P. Casado1 and M. To this end, event-related potentials were recorded during the presentation of high arousal pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral expressions followed by pictures presented to the left or right visual hemifield. Subjects were told to listen carefully the expressions and discriminate between color, shape and position of the pictures. After the unpleasant auditory stimuli, compared to neutral expressions, decreased processing resources for spatial location, color, and shape were first reflected in a reduced N1 component and a subsequent P1 component decrease. Unpleasant expressions processing effects were also apparent in a reduced early posterior negativity (EPN) starting from 200 ms after picture onset, as well as in a decrease of later components (>300 ms), reflecting also later effects of the negative emotional context on visual processing. These findings suggest that automatic processing of unpleasant emotional auditory stimuli interferes with visual stimulus processing of location, shape, and color. Implications of these results for visuo-spatial working memory and processes involved in visual selective attention are discussed.
