Abstract

In this article, the large anisotropy and strong coupling between rare-earth (RE=Sm, Dy, Tb etc.) metal and transition metal (TM=Co, Fe, etc.) are proposed to be utilized to improve the thermal stability (KuV*/kBT) and coercivity (Hc) of high-density recording media. The effects of Dy doping, which was added to the Cr underlayer and Cr overcoat layer, on magnetic and reversal properties are presented. It was found that Dy doping in the Cr1−xDyx underlayer and overcoat layer resulted in an increase of the KuV*/kBT and coercivity (Hc). The appreciable increases in KuV*/kBT and Hc indicate that Dy doping into the underlayer and intermediate layer is promising for the preparation of high-density recording media.
