Abstract

Since McCay et al. reported beneficial effects of caloric restriction on longevity in rats (McCay et al. 1935), the influence of dietary factors on longevity and spontaneously occurring pathological lesions have been studied in experimental animals for several decades by many authors (Berg and Simms 1961; Maeda et al. 1985; Tannenbaum 1945; Tucker 1979; Yu et al. 1985). Food or caloric restriction inhibits the development of some tumors or age-related pathological lesions such as chronic nephropathy and myocardiopathy. However, there are few available data explaining a rational relationship between food restriction and hematological, biochemical, or pathological findings in Fischer rats.
