Abstract
To determine the single and combined effects of diet and exercise upon lipoprotein subfractions, 219 men and women aged 41-50 with a deranged coronary risk profile were randomized into one of four groups: control (C), dietary intervention (D), exercise intervention (E) or the combination of the two (D+E). Dietary advice was given according to each participant's risk profile. The participants in the exercise groups took part in supervised endurance-exercise sessions three times a week. The lipoprotein subfraction changes (±SE) after one year of intervention were as follows:Table The combined group had a significant effect on the lipoprotein components compared with the control group. There were no effects on these parameters from diet alone or exercise alone compared with the control group. There was no significant effect on LDL cholesterol in any of the intervention groups compared with the control group (data not shown in the table). However, the significant reduction in apoB in the combined group compared with all other groups suggests that a change within the LDL cholesterol subclass-pool may have occurred. We conclude that the combined diet and exercise intervention effects on lipoprotein components are superior to the single ones.
