Abstract

This chapter demonstrates that the deflection, stress couples, and shear forces produced by static and dynamic live loads are influenced by the dead loads on elastic thin plates. The governing equation for plates that includes the effect of dead loads is formulated originally. Key factors dominating the effect of dead loads in simply supported plates are clarified from closed-form solutions proposed here for the static and dynamic plates. A method reflecting the effect of dead loads on live loads is proposed for practical use. The effect of dead loads is demonstrated to be an important consideration with respect to the safety of simply supported and lightweight plates.
