Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the effects of damper bars in converter-fed operation of hydropower generator. The generator under study is a salient-pole synchronous machine with fractional-slot windings which is connected to a neutral-point-clamped (NPC) converter. Time-stepping finite element (FE) analysis is used to study spatial and temporal characteristics of flux density and radial force harmonics. It is revealed how damper bars could affect the amplitude of the additional harmonics (produced by PWM converter) in stator currents, airgap flux density, radial force density and electromagnetic torque. In addition, the influence of damper bars on different modes of vibration is addressed. Moreover, it is shown how converter-fed operation could increase eddy current losses in the dampers.
