Abstract

A system was developed, with mammalian cells grown in vitro, which provides a method for the rapid detection and quantitation of continuous low- level radiation effects. The method indicates that there is a linear relationship between the dose rate and the changes in generation time of the irradiated cultures. Possible mechanisms of chronic radiation action are discussed in light of acute radiation data, and the results on chronic radiation are presented.
