Abstract

Effects of composition on the optical properties of non-doped and Nd 3+ or Yb 3+ doped GdVO 4 and related vanadates have been examined by the compositional variations in the photoluminescence (PL) intensities and the lattice parameters. The PL intensities (440 nm) and the lattice parameters, c-axis and a-axis vary dramatically with the vanadium content, x=V/(Gd+V), of the specimens. PL intensities peaking at 440 and 1064 nm from Nd doped GdVO 4 and 989 nm from Yb doped GdVO 4 also varies with composition, x. The PL intensities at 1064 nm and 989 nm are the strongest in the specimen with x=0.495. Vanadium contents, x, of the specimens are found to influence greatly the PL intensity of GdVO 4 doped with laser active elements.
