Abstract

The loss of teeth and their supporting structures produces radical changes in facial appearance. Successful efforts to restore the appearance of the face with complete dentures are dependent upon the knowledges of (1) the anatomy of esthetics, and (2) the esthetics of anatomy. The first relates to limitations imposed upon dentures by anatomic structures and their relationships to each other during function; the second involves an approach to esthetics which is based on concepts of natural harmonies evident when anatomy is in action. The former constitutes a respect for the integrity of anatomic demands, whereas the latter is an appreciation of the beauty of anatomy as it fulfills these demands.
