Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the effects of combined treatment of chlorella intake and exercise training on antioxidant enzyme activity in rat"s liver tissue. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats, 7 weeks old, were used. Experimental groups were randomly divided into 4 groups : CG(control group, n = 8), EG(exercise group, n = 8), CIG(chlorella intake group, n = 8), and CI+E(chlorella intake+exercise group, n = 8). The chlorella intake was composed of 20% protein, and 35% fat. In the exercised groups, the rats exercise treadmill for 30 min/day, 5 days/week for 12 weeks. Data analysis was done by computer using SPSS(Ver.18.0) and one-way ANOVA. The results of this study are as follows: the exercise with chlorella intake group and chlorella intake group showed a significant increase in SOD activity of antioxidant enzymes compared to the control group; the exercise with chlorella intake group and chlorella intake group showed a significant increase in CAT activity of antioxidant enzymes compared to the exercise group and control group; the exercise with chlorella intake group and chlorella intake group showed a significant increase in GPx activity of antioxidant enzymes compared to the exercise group. In conclusion, chlorella intake was a very effective method to improve antioxidant system. Further research regarding the effects of exercise and chlorella intake is required.
