Abstract

The effect of ion-ion and ion-neutral collisions on longitudinal ion waves propagating perpendicular to a magnetic field has been calculated. Ion-neutral collisions are incorporated into the Vlasov calculation via a BGK collision term while the ion-ion collision portion of the calculation is based on a model Fokker-Planck equation. It is shown that the effect of both types of collisions is to cause the dispersion relations to become more fluid-like. For quite modest values of the ion-ion collision frequency (νii/ωci∼0.1), the dispersion relations are essentially those predicted by the moment equations.
