Abstract

We study the effect of collision and ion Mach number in a magnetized plasma sheath having two species of positive ions using fluid model. It is assumed that both the ions are singly ionized and in thermal equilibrium, and the electrons obey Boltzmann distribution. Our work signifies that the collision greatly affects the ion densities, which explicitly affect space charge density, net current density and the transverse drift of ions. On increasing the collisional frequency, ions accumulation point and current saturation point shift towards the sheath entrance (away from the wall). The ion Mach number affects potential profile and velocity profiles of both ion species. The magnitude of wall potential increases from 34 V to 45 V with the increase in ion Mach number from 0.3 to 0.9. Furthermore, it is shown that the effect of collisional force and Lorentz force is reduced at the sheath entrance by increasing the ion Mach number, which helps to control the flux of particles, momentum flow and energy flow towards the wall.

Highlights

  • The effects of collisional force and Lorentz force are more prominent near the sheath entrance that causes to increase ion density

  • Khanal density and ion velocity decreases according to the equation of continuity. These two obtained plots show that the effect of collisional force and Lorentz force is reduced near the sheath entrance by increasing the ion Mach number

  • We studied the effect of collision and ion Mach number in magnetized plasma sheath having two species of positive ions, electrons and neutral particles

Summary

INTRODUCTION

The study of magnetized plasma sheath plays a vital role for further exploring the plasma sheath characteristics and can be useful in magnetic fusion, industrial and biomedical applications of plasma.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7] Many works are devoted to understand the formation of one dimensional planar plasma sheath and its characteristics.[4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11] the study of plasma sheath is not yet fully understood and still an interesting field of study.[12,13,14,15] In general, plasma consists of positive ions, electrons and some neutral particles. Hatami[13] studied magnetized plasma sheath consisting of multiple ions using fluid model and showed that the density distribution of lighter ion species does not decrease monotonically towards the wall while the density of heavier ion species decreases smoothly throughout the sheath. R. Moulick et al.[16] studied the effect of collisional force in electronegative plasma sheath having multiple ion species. Hatami et al.[17] studied the effect of collision in magnetized plasma sheath with two species of positive ions. We have investigated the effect of ion-neutral collisional force and ion Mach number on the multi-component magnetized plasma sheath. The obtained results are useful in sputtering, etching and surface modifications of materials
