Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide on the rats with hypoxic-ischemic brain damage and the possible mechanism involved. Methods First, the hypoxic-ischemic brain damage rat model was developed. Pathologic changes in the ultra-structure of the rat brain tissue were closely observed under electron microscopy. The level of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)released from the brain tissue was detected by colorimetry, and the levels of inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β(IL-1β)and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)were detected by ELISA. Results As compared with the model group, codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide intervention could significantly improve the integrity of the rat brain tissue, reduce the LDH level and obviously decrease the levels of IL-1β and TNF-α. Conclusions Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide has certain protective effects on the rats with hypoxic-ischemic brain damage, and the mechanism involved might be associated with the inhibition of inflammatory response. Key words: Codonopsis pilosula polysaccharide; Hypoxic-ischemic brain damage; Inflammatory response
