Abstract

Cochlear implantation has been performed for 16 years by the authors at the Semmelweis University. During this time, different types of cochlear implants have been used. Altogether in 30% of cases, restoration of hearing was observed in the non-implanted ear, getting better constantly as time went by. In a considerable number of cases, application of a hearing aid even became possible due to the contralateral hearing improvement.Besides contralateral hearing improvement, a significant improvement could also be observed in the caloric responsiveness of the non-operated labyrinth. In the authors' opinion, improvement of contralateral hearing and vestibular function could be explained by recovery of efferent innervation or by brain plasticity.
