Abstract

The first studies on the effect of chemical carcinogens on the lung in organ cultures were done by ILSE LASNITZKI (1956). She also used this method to study the effects of cigarette smoke condensate and a 3,4-benzopyrene-enriched fraction on the human fetal lung (LASNITZKI, 1958, 1968). The lung tissue treated with these agents showed a hyperplasia of the bronchiolar epithelium, indicating a qualitative difference between the various treatments. To our knowledge, there is no other report on the activity of smoke condensate nor whole tobacco smoke on the lung in organ culture.
