We have examined. bv dual-photon absorptiometry, the total bodf and vertebral mineral density in 22 male heroin addicts at the start of a rehabilitation programme. Compared with normal, age-matched subjects, there was a significant decrease of vertebral bone mineral density, whereas total body mineral density and the fat and muscle mass of drug users were not significantly different from normal controls.
