Abstract

When cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were exposed to high cell-density environments, the glyoxalase I activity increased, and the amount of mRNA of the glyoxalase I gene in the yeast cells increased in accord with the enzyme activity. The mRNA level of the glyoxalase I gene in flocculent mutant cells of S. cerevisiae was also higher than that in the corresponding parental cells; therefore, cell-cell interaction may affect the mRNA level of the glyoxalase I gene in S. cerevisiae.
