Abstract

Binary blends of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and polyphthalamide (PPA) were prepared via a melt blending method. The carbon nanotube (CNT) added to the blends not only improved the properties of the two polymers, but also affected the morphology of the immiscible PPS/PPA blends. PPS always forms the continuous phase in the blends in which CNT particles are distributed. The results show that PPA has nucleation effect on the crystallization of PPS, but does not improve its mechanical properties. However, addition of CNT improved the tensile and flexural strength of blend, as well as promoted the crystallization of PPS. The blend provided larger electrical conductivity than each polymer. CNT increased the maximum tensile and flexural strength by almost 34.5 and 19.3 %, respectively. Addition of 10 mass% CNT to blend resulted in a composite material with the minimum volume resistivity at a reduction of seven orders of magnitude compared with that of the neat blend.
