Abstract

The quest for cleaner production of cementitious materials for concrete has led to increase in the use of waste materials as potential replacement for conventional materials. In this study, the effect of calcined clay on the engineering properties of cementitious mortars has been investigated. Calcined clay, prepared by subjecting raw clay to 100oC and 200oC temperatures, was used as a partial replacement of Portland cement at 5%, 10% and 15%. Thirty cylindrical mortar samples of 100 × 200 mm were produced. The samples were cured for 7 days, 28 days and 56 days. Properties, such as water absorption, density and compressive strength of mortars were determined. The results showed that calcined clay was suitable for enhancing the properties of lightweight mortars. Although, its effect on workability of mortar was not significant, however, higher strength was achieved at 5% calcined clay content replacement of Portland cement.
