Abstract
1. 1. The size of nematocysts isolated from acontia of the sea anemone Calliactis tricolor was measured successively in different solutions. 2. 2. The volume of nematocysts decreased by 20% in 50 mM CaCl 2 containing 40% polyethylene glycol (PEG), and increased by 15–20% in 5mM EOTA. 3. 3. Nematocysts treated with l M sodium citrate or distilled water displayed a similar decrease in their volume when immersed in 50 mM CaCl 2 in 40% PEG. 4. 4. When nematocysts stained with 0.1% toluidine blue were induced to discharge, stained intracapsular fluid did not mix with water from outside, but was extruded through the tip of the tubule.
