Abstract

Coupling is observed between harmonics of unstable drift cyclotron loss-cone waves in an axisymmetric mirror trap. The behavior of the nonlinear interaction is apparent from differences in average fluctuation amplitudes between discharges in which the fundamental frequency is varied and from the evolution in fluctuation amplitudes during a discharge. The coupling occurs only when the fundamental mode is suppressed by electron bounce-resonance Landau damping. The evolution in fluctuation amplitudes may be related to observed changes in this damping during the discharge.
