Abstract

Reports of biological effects of ultrasound at diagnostic frequencies and intensities have not been confirmed. Several investigations have failed to reproduce MacIntosh and Davies' report of chromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes in vitro. We have been unable to reproduce Kremkau and Witcofski's report of mitotic index reduction in regenerating rat livers in vitro. At therapeutic intensities the lysis of mammalian cells in suspension is a well established effect. We have recently shown that effects short of complete cell rupture are also possible. A large fraction of the cells which remain intact is no longer viable as determined by vital dye exclusion. Future work will attempt to identify sublethal effects such as have been observed and established in plant systems.
