Abstract

THE purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of level of background illumination, direction of the variation (up or down), time interval between change, and interaction among these main effects upon the body weight of broiler chickens.The dependent variable was weight gain from beginning to completion of the experiment. The independent variables were background intensity (high, low, or dark), direction of change or variation (up or down in the low and high background groups; up only in the dark group), and light-dark period. The light change in this study was presumed to act as a stimulus to initiate a change in activity level (increase should raise activity level and decrease should lower activity level). If the sole function of light were to insure adequate feeding time, then various intensities should provide uniform weight gains.
