Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of atorvastatin on the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and microRNA(miRNA, miR)-21 expression in rats with myocardial infarction. Methods The models of acute myocardial infarction were established in 140 Wistar rats. All rats were divided into sham operation group, myocardial infarction control group, low atorvastatin group and high atorvastatin group.Left ventricular mass index(LVMI), collagen volume fraction(CVF), MMP-2 and miR-21 were detected after operation. Results LVMI, CVF, and the expression of miR-21 and MMP-2 mRNA were significantly decreased in atorvastatin groups(P<0. 05); The expression of miR-21 and MMP-2 m RNA in the surrounding infarct areas had a positive correlation (rcontrolgroup= 0. 611, P< 0. 05; rlowatorvastatingroup= 0. 502, P< 0. 05; rhighatorvastatingroup= 0. 541, P<0. 05). Conclusion Atorvastatin could decrease the level of MMP-2 and the expression of miR-21 in rats with myocardial infarction, which could improve ventricular remodeling and heart function. Key words: Atorvastatin; Myocardial infarction; Matrix metalloproteinase-2; MicroRNA-21
