Abstract

Studies performed in animals and humans showed that the administration of aluminum hydroxide gel delayed and depressed the gastrointestinal absorption of isoniazid. The effects of another antacid, magaldrate, were less pronounced and more variable. The depressed absorption of isoniazid was probably related to delayed gastric emptying that resulted from the presence of aluminum ion in the stomach. On the basis of this study, it is recommended that patients receiving antacids in addition to antituberculous chemotherapy be given the antimicrobial agents at least 1 hour before administration of antacid.
