Abstract

This paper has studied the mechanical and microstructural behavior of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy after annealing, solution treatment and ageing at various temperature conditions in Argon (Ar) inert gas atmosphere to prevent oxidation. The microstructural behavior of the alloy was studied using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The mechanical behaviors were studied by tensile and impact test. The microstructural and mechanical behavior of the metal after the heat treatments were analyzed and the results reveal that the mechanical and microstructural properties of titanium Ti6Al4V alloy are altered by doing solution treatment and ageing. The ductility increases initially, but in the later stages it decreases drastically while the yield strength and ultimate strength enhanced remarkably. The mechanical and microstructural properties of titanium Ti6Al4V alloy can be improved when the alloy is subjected to annealing, solution treatment and ageing.
