Abstract
Effects of commercially available alumina and silica nanoparticles on automotive refinish polyurethane clear coatings are discussed in this report. Significant improvements in scratch resistance were observed in coatings containing low levels of alumina nanoparticles. Silica particles caused only slight improvements under the test conditions of this study. AFM analysis of coatings indicates that the particles are well dispersed. Effects of silica and alumina nanoparticles on film clarity and adhesion of the coatings to metal substrates are also discussed.
