Abstract

1. The effects of acetylcholine and norepinephrine on uptake and efflux of 45Ca in rabbit iris muscle were investigated. 2. The uptake of 45Ca was studied by the “La + method”. LaCl 3 (10 mM) effectively displaced the extracellular 45Ca and inhibited both uptake and efflux of 45Ca in the tissue. 3. Acetylcholine (50 μM) increased 45Ca uptake and decreased 45Ca efflux and this effect was inhibited by atropine (20 μM). 4. Norepinephrine (100 μM) decreased 45Ca uptake and increased 45Ca efflux and this effect was blocked by phentolamine (100 μM).
