Abstract

1. 1. The effects of acetylcholine (ACh) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on the electrical and mechanical activity of the Modiolus heart were studied, as was the ionic basis of these effects. 2. 2. ACh excitation is characterized by depolarization resulting from an increase in sodium conductance. 3. 3. Three mechanisms appear to contribute to the inhibitory effect of 5-HT: suppression of the pacemaker, an increased chloride conductance and, possibly, interference with calcium movements associated with the action potential.
