Abstract

The strong static magnetic fields (SMFs) have caused great health concerns on the potential occupational and public exposure in recent year. The present study focused on the effects of the strong SMFs on ATP contents in the two cell lines: human-hamster hybrid (A L ) cells and mitochondria deficient human-hamster hybrid (p 0 A L ) cells. There were significant decreases in the ATP contents after exposure to 8.5 T SMFs for 3 hr in the two cell lines (p<0.05). After 12 hr incubation for recovery, the ATP contents in the AL cells exposed to 8.5 T SMFs were retrieved gradually and there were no significant differences among controls and exposure groups. In contrast, the ATP contents in p 0 A L cells exposed to 8.5 T SMF were significantly lower than that in controls after 12 hr recovery period. Our present data suggested that exposure to 8.5 T SMFs decreased the ATP contents in the two cell lines. The mitochondria might be involved in the post-exposure recovery process of the strong SMFs.
