Effects of 2-deoxy-D-glucose and 5-Fu on proliferation and apoptosis of human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of 2-deoxy-D-glucose ( 2-DG) or 5-Fu alone and the combination of both on the proliferation and apoptosis of human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells. Methods Human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells were treated with 2-DG or 5-Fu alone, or both. The inhibitory effect on the proliferation of MGC-803 cells was detected by MTT method. Apoptotic rate was assayed by flow cytometry. Results 2-DG or 5-Fu inhibited the growth of MGC-803 cells obviously and induced the apoptosis. When 2-DG and 5-Fu were combined, the inhibitory effect and apoptotic rate were improved (P<0.05). Conclusions 2-DG inhibits the growth of human gastric cancer MGC-803 cells. The combination of 2-DG and 5-Fu improves the ability of 5-Fu to attack the tumor cells. Key words: 2-deoxy-D-glucose; Gastric cancer; Apoptosis
