Abstract

A composite Zn coating is prepared on 2024 aluminum alloy by microarc oxidation (MAO) and the corrosion resistance is investigated. During MAO, the addition of an appropriate concentration of Zn2+ regulates the size and intensity of surface sparks on the sample giving rise to a uniform distribution of MAO current and less large discharge channels. The crystal structure of Al2O3 is compressed and the density of the coating increases. The coating has the Zn3Al94O144 phase and electrochemical tests reveal a corrosion current density (icorr) that is 3 orders of magnitude smaller than that of the coating without Zn doping. Density-functional theory calculations show that Zn inhibits the adsorption of Cl- and consequently reduces the damage to the passivation layer.
