Abstract

In this study, the fatigue crack in the welding has been studied, and the effectiveness of portable eddy current testing (ECT) method on welding has been inspected. The specimen selected is a pipeline removed by industry because of its defect. The specimen material used in this study is a ferromagnetic material. After that, the fatigue crack detection in the welding pipeline was inspected using the ECT through two types of probe movement in three places on the weldment. It is the right toe inspection, the left toe inspection and the cap inspection. Then, the next NDT inspection is Ultrasonic Testing (UT) will be used to inspect the welding so that both of the NDT data can be compared. After that, the effectiveness of portable ECT in inspecting the weldment can be evaluated. Various length of crack from 0.3 mm to 2.0 mm has been found in the welding area using ECT and UT. ECT and UT coincide with the crack position in the right and left toe; however, the UT method detects deeper depth cracks at the same position. The study found that portable eddy current method inspection used in this study can provide good agreement when compared to UT inspection.
