Abstract

Six patients with chronic renal failure were treated under strict metabolic balance conditions with low protein diets of similar nitrogen content, but differing essential amino acid content. Though only one patient achieved positive nitrogen balance during the study, analysis of the trends in balance showed that the diet containing a higher proportion of essential amino acids caused a more rapid improvement in the state of balance. Methods of analysis of balance data in the unsteady state are discussed with comments on the experimental design necessary to allow valid comparison.
