Abstract

Acute DVT is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the hospitalized patient, particularly in the surgical patient. The triad of venous stasis, endothelial injury, and hypercoagulable state, rst posited by Virchow in 1856, has held true more than a century and a half later. This was a hospital-based prospective study conducted at KIMS, Amalapuram between September 2020 and June 2022.The Kagoshima-DVT score was used to diagnose DVT by assigning 2 points for D-dimer ≥1.5 g/ml,1 point each for female sex, age ≥60 years, prolonged immobility, ongoing glucocorticoid therapy, and cancer with high risk of DVT. They were categorised into three groups as low risk (score 0-2), intermediate risk (3-4) and high risk (≥5) Whole leg ultrasonography was performed on them.
