Abstract

INTRODUCTIONGENTAMICIN, a broad spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic chemically related to kanamycin and neomycin was reported in 1963 as being active against most pathogenic bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae and of the genus Pseudomonas (Black et at., 1963; Jao and Jackson, 1963; Weinstein et al., 1963; White, 1964). Though there are numerous publications documenting its efficacy against human clinical infections (Brayton and Louria, 1964; Klein et al., 1964; Rubenfire et al., 1969; Smith et al., 1969; Stone et al., 1965; Waisbren, 1969; Waitz and Weinstein, 1969), there are none in regards to its use against animal infections. Paracolobactrum arizonae infection of young turkeys is recognized (Edwards et al., 1959; Goetz, 1962; Kowalski and Stevens, 1968; Smith et al., 1969) as being one of the more serious problems confronting the turkey industry.
