Abstract
Abstract Four formulated baits, gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), and a combination of formulated bait and gizzard shad were evaluated for their effectiveness for capturing crawfish (Procambarus spp.) in three studies from March through May 1986. Purina jumbo (688 g crawfish captured per trap set), Super Rex (678 g/trap), and an Acadiana Choice–gizzard shad combination (659 g/trap) attracted 28% more crawfish (by weight) than the least effective baits, gizzard shad (529 g/trap) and Chez Sidney (527 g/trap). The Acadiana Choice–gizzard shad combination was 16% more effective than Acadiana Choice alone and 25% more effective than gizzard shad alone. The relative effectiveness of baits for attracting crawfish was similar in wooded, open, and rice crawfish ponds. Crawfish catches in 12-h diurnal (856 g/trap) or nocturnal (871 g/trap) trap sets were 30% greater than the catch in 24-h sets (660 g!trap). Traps with 150 g of bait were as effective as those baited with 225 or 300 g.
