Abstract

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is generally considered to be a developmental disorder and is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Attention deficit disorder (ADD), a subtype of ADHD that lacks the hyperkinetic component, is essentially equivalent to DSM-IV criteria for ADHD of the predominantly inattentive type. ADD was initially thought to be a disease of childhood. However, it is now believed that its symptoms may persist even after attaining adulthood.
