Abstract

Temperature gains due to three types of adiabatic toroidal compression are compared on the assumption of the fixed chamber dimension and the maximum toroidal field on the chamber axis. A combined adiabatic heating scheme may be more advantageous in obtaining a high-temperature plasma than minor or major radius compressions depending on the plasma loss mechanism. A combined adiabatic compression scheme is more favourable than a major radius compression scheme when the final plasma dimensions are the same, for all plasma loss scalings considered here.
