Abstract

The aim of education is to refine the personality of an individual to make them socially useful by increasing productivity and makes one economically self-sufficient through vocational education. Every individual has to find means of subsistence and has to be useful and productive member of the modern complex society. Only education induces a child to make his own contribution to the maintenance and development of the society. But there are individual differences exist in the society. Special children possess some special characteristics, which make them different from other children. They differ from the average or normal children in the physical, social, moral, emotional characteristics. They do not benefit from normal school programme. They need special help from that given to other children of same age. Mentally retarded children are also such children who find some difficulty in adjustment in different types of environment. Mental retardation is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behaviour as expressed in conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills. This paper is an attempt to develop activities related to home living skills for mentally challenged children of 10–12 years in terms of performance of selected skills.
