Abstract

To determine the effectiveness of an education program on nurses’ knowledge toward prevention of orthopedic wound infection and to determine the relationship between orthopedic nurses knowledge and their demographic data characteristic. The randomized sample consists of (70) nurses at orthopedic wards in baghdad Teaching Hospital from 23th of October 2017 to 20th of June 2018, which is divided into two equal groups, (30) nurses are assigned as study group while another (30) nurses were as control group but only the study group were exposed to the educational program. To evaluate nurses’ knowledge the researcher used a questionnaire composed of (40) multiple choice question and the validity of the questionnaire was determined by a panel of experts. The findings of the study indicated that the orthopedic nurses have inadequate or deficit in some aspects relative to prevention of wound infection in orthopedic wards. Significant relationship was found between orthopedic nurses’ knowledge and their gender for study group and between nurses’ knowledge and their age group and level of education for control group, while no significant relationship was found between orthopedic nurses’ knowledge and other sociodemographic data such as (year of experiences, year of experiences in orthopedic ward and duration of training courses) for both groups.
