Abstract

Objectives: Preoperative care is a vital component in the perioperative management of patients undergoing colorectal surgery. Implementation of preoperative care programmes vary in their approach, depending on financial and staff availability of the hospital. The effectiveness of such programmes could be assessed by a patient feedback survey. Rotorua Hospital, a regional hospital that has 180 beds and serves a population of 110,000 people has developed the concept of a “one stop shop’ preoperative clinic. It is a holistic approach to preoperative care that provides for your standard medical assessment and optimisation of risk factors by dedicated nursing and anaesthetic staff, but also provides for multidisciplinary consults with other allied health professionals. A dedicated bowel surgery information booklet is also distributed at the “one stop shop” clinic and the colorectal nurse specialist also makes calls to patients before and after surgery.
