Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 5-FU cream in the management of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia. Methods: We reviewed the chart´s of 10 patients with vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia after hysterectomy who underwent application of 5-FU cream at gynecologic oncologic department of Ajou university Hospital from July 1994 to March 2002. All patient had performed simple or extrafacial or radical hysterectomy, and pathologic diagnosis were as follows: cervi :al intraepithelial neoplasia(n=5), microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma(n=1), cervix cancer(n=2), leiomyoma(n=1) and unkown etiology(n=1). The 5-FU cream was applied into the entire vaginal cavity every week for 8-10 weeks. Patients were followed up every three months at first two years, and then every six months. Results: Patients were followed up for an average 22.2 months with regular cytologic evaluation. 9 patients remain free of disease. Only one patient showed ASCUS in Pap smear after one year after the treatment. She performed biopsy under the colposcopy. The results was flat condyloma. Conclusion: This study shows that VAIN is highly associated with CIN or cervical cancer. 5-FU cream can be used appropriately, and it will be further effective, if consider the location, number of lesion, length of vagina, and other patients histories.
